Moon - Daughters of Luna (Promptober 2025 #10)

Luna - waxing gibbous moon (3779922157)
Luna

Few things inspire curiosity like the moon. It looks so close, but nobody can walk there in a thousand years. It controls the tides, and its light can transform humans into beasts. But what about the goddess of the moon?

So for the next few minutes let's take a look at Luna, and more specifically at her devoted possibly-demigod followers.

The Daughters of Luna

Originally a secretive sect who worshipped the moon, the Daughters have always existed under various names, keeping the everyday wisdom of life and preventing the sun-worshipping men from causing too much damage. Eventually the Daughters found a way to call directly on the goddess's power to cause subtle changes in people's hearts and calm the warlike passions of nations. Some claim they are actual daughters of the goddess, elevating them to demigods among mortals. They operate in the shadows, pulling strings and exerting their influence behind the scenes.

Tenets of Faith

The Daughters strongly believe in the power of intuition to prevent harm and protect the helpless. They regularly discuss inklings and vibes that something just isn't right before researching and analyzing the situation to best skew the situation in a favorable way. Some say they have uncanny senses, honeyed tongues, or telepathic powers, and they don't dissuade these notions except in the face of persecution, which they have faced many times over the centuries.

They view themselves as bastions of sanity in an insane world, pushing destructive passions safely away from everyday people and innocent bystanders. They are fiercely loyal to their fellow Daughters, never betraying others to the tyrants they oppose. They value innocent life and the safety of others above their own, and whispered rumors always feature Daughters' bravery in the face of armed conquest and forcible oppression.

Using The Daughters

The Daughters of Luna can fit in a variety of TTRPG settings, from a near-fanatical sect of a fantasy god, to a hidden coven of modern-day witches, to a distributed cult of spies and influence peddlers traveling between the stars. They thrive in oppressive environments, slipping through the shadows to bolster resistance forces and deliver crucial intelligence through their network.

  • In D&D terms, the Daughters would work quite well as clerics (usually Life, Trickery, or Twilight domains), Moon Circle druids, rogues (Inquisitive or Mastermind especially), Shadow sorcerers, and Celestial warlocks. Demigod status isn't out of the question, so aasimar characters would absolutely fit the Daughters' mold.
  • Daughters in modern-day settings should focus on influencing people, uncovering people's secrets through diligent investigation or mind-reading, and anything that would protect or help those unable to protect themselves effectively.
  • Daughters of the future would have psionic abilities or potent cyberware/bioware that they keep hidden. They also have very talented hackers and security specialists who find secrets and plant stories in the correct ears without getting caught.
NOTE: I had no idea where I was going with this when I started writing, but a secretive sect of possibly demigod witches who pull strings and keep noncombatants safe and healthy seems like something we could use about now.
