Break into the D&D 4E armory with a collection of magic items and an alternate White Dragon breath weapon from guest blogger DMFumbl of the Dragonlance D&D Game Blog.
Part of the Winter Is Coming RPG Blog Festival.
A collection of cold-themed magic items and powers for your D&D 4E campaign.
Ice Armor
Level 2+
This plate armor looks like polished glass, but is slightly cold to the touch. The ice mages of the Far North craft these armors from specially enchanted blocks of solid ice.
Lvl 2 +1 520 gp
Lvl 7 +2 2,600 gp
Lvl 12 +3 13,000 gp
Lvl 17 +4 65,000 gp
Lvl 22 +5 325,000 gp
Lvl 27 +6 1,625,000 gp
Armor: Plate
Enhancement: AC
Property: Resist 5 cold.
Level 12: Resist 10 cold.
Level 22: Resist 15 cold.
Blinding Reflection - Power (Daily): Immediate Reaction
Use this power when a melee or ranged attack would hit you, but before damage is rolled. The attacker rerolls the attack, using the second value, even if it is higher.
The armor reflects any light in the area momentarily blinding anyone looking at it.
Frost Goblet
Level 5
This finely crafted goblet of gold and inlaid jewels has a perpetual ring of frost around the cup. It is a prized item among the thanes of the ice dwarves, who secretly use such an item when dining with foreign visitors that haven't fully earned the ice dwarves trust.
Wondrous Item 2,000 gp
Power (Daily): Standard Action
Any beverage within the mug always stays cold and is cleansed of any poison 10th level or lower. Many dwarves prize this item as much for the former property as the latter.
Survival Arrows
Level 10
For most purposes, including all combat purposes, these items function just like regular arrows. They do have two unusual properties that make them highly prized by rangers and other wilderness travelers.
Other Consumable 200 gp
Power (Consumable): Standard Action
When a Survival Arrow is shot into the sky, it bursts into a bright flame creating a signal that can be seen for miles.
Power (Consumable): Standard Action
When the tip of the arrow is plunged into the ground, the arrow shaft begins to glow faintly and gives off enough heat in a 40 ft area to negate the Cold and Frigid Cold environmental dangers. The glow does not create a fire, nor enough heat to use for cooking. Also it does not block out rain, wind, or other environmental conditions in its area of effect. This effect lasts for 10 hours.
In place of the normal White Dragon breath weapon, you might want to try the following for a change of pace.
Blizzard Blast
Alternate White Dragon Breath Weapon
The icy dragon's breath fills the area with blizzard like conditions.
Breath Weapon (cold) * Recharge [6]
Close burst 3 * Zone
Effect: 3 cold damage to any creature ending its turn in the zone.
Also, the zone is considered Heavily Obscured terrain. Multiple uses of the Blizzard Blast in the same area do not stack.
Sustain Minor: The blizzard persists. One action can sustain multiple Blizzard Blast effects.
