Shaan's first memory involves seeing her mother arrested as a heretic, and swimming her heart out to escape from the Inqusitors, hiding between the sculpted residences of Nenaer, the underwater holy city of the Nelendi Kingdom. She lived by her wits and luck for years, never able to find her parents. She gave up looking in her early teen years, no longer sure she would even recognize her parents, and she eventually stole and saved enough to pay for a merchant to take her away. She didn't care where she went, as long as it took her far away from the Inquisitors. She still doesn't like strongly religious types.
The merchant, Serena, took her to Laurina Rin, the capital and largest metropolis in Nelendi. Serena kept tabs on Shaan whenever she returned home, and they became friends as Shaan found her place in the underworld of the city. Shaan made a few small thefts and earned her way into the Anglers, a local Thieves' Guild, but she craved something slightly slower paced. Serena paid her for a few caravan guard gigs. Boring, but it paid a few bills, plus it brought some rumors of sunken treasure sites.
She got a couple of friends to help her clear out the first site, and it hooked her hard. After the unsafe environment, a few animated skeletons to lay to rest, rusted locks to pick, and the ridiculous amount of traps on the chests, exploring wrecks made for easy money. She couldn't wait to explore the next site.
She accompanied Serena on a trading run to Fellport. It took a few more trips to Fellport before she decided to move in. She bought a small shop one level up from Dockside and hung out a shingle as Trident Salvage, a one-woman item recovery and ship salvage service. Business boomed, as she didn't have much overhead and got things done for a small deposit plus twenty-five percent of the value recovered. She hires others when she needs to, and she prefers to work with other Nelendi when possible.
Sometimes she helps Bez at The Sly Spider when he needs some underwater repair work done, just for a little extra cash. Thinking her way through an abandoned wreck to find the cargo within remains her first love and favorite assignment. She remains friends with Serena, and they have dinner to catch up whenever they find each other in the same place at the same time. She has done some recovery work in Fellport Harbor, but she tends to avoid the harbor's depths, and she doesn't quite know why.
Shaan keeps her pale green hair cut short to keep it out of the way. Her ice-blue eyes stand out against her pale skin. She stands taller than most Nelendi, which equates to average height for a human. If asked, she says she solves problems, and she takes that idea to an extreme degree, sometimes alienating those around her with her single-minded devotion to the problem at hand. She never travels without her prybar which expands into an eight-foot spear or trident, and the large pouch at her hip containing her combat net and dive bags. She wears a fine suit of well-oiled leather armor the color of beach sand, and her boots have clips that attach to her belt when she dives.
