Fey Flowers (Promptober 2025 #29)

Digitalis purpurea (foxglove, common foxglove, purple foxglove or lady's glove) (13973475199)
Foxglove in the wild.

Foxglove's purple, bell-shaped flowers remind people of tiny hats worn by fey creatures. Some think they denote where fairies have rested, doffing their hats and flying off in the morning without them. Wizards have taken this folklore to heart and enchanted foxglove flowers to step between the worlds for a moment.

Fey Flower
Wondrous Item, uncommon

Commonly found in groups of 2-12 in a cloth pouch, these still-fresh purple flowers prove surprisingly resistant to jostling. When held between a finger and thumb and snapped as a bonus action, they briefly tear the fabric of reality into the Fey Realm, allowing the snapper to misty step to a location they can see within 30 feet. The flower explodes in a puff of purple mist when used.

Summoning Circles (Promptober 2025 #22)

This is a drawing of a 5 pointed star within a circle. Often called a pentagram.
A common protective circle

Summoning circles (and protective circles generally) come in many forms. Circles made of quickly-spread holy water, rock salt, or silver dust can do in a pinch, but something a little more permanent will provide more power and durability, so a simple gust of wind won't break the circle and let your powerful summoned entity free. How can the everyday wizard or temple cleric set up a more permanent circle?

To start, take some time to design the circle. What form will it take? Do you want a simple pentagram, or an elaborate concentric collection of arcane iconography or divine sigils? What materials will you use to make the circle? Will it be crushed lapis lazuli surrounded by white marble, or worked mithril inlaid in mahogany? How big do you need it? Should you go larger than the standard 10 foot diameter in case you want to summon a demon lord or Archduke of Hell and provide some small amount of comfort?

Sword In The Forest - Forest Blade (Promptober 2025 #21)

The Cherusker 03
Forest Blade
Forest Blade (Glad'sigil)
Weapon (scimitar), rare (requires attunement)

This short, sturdy blade of ancient design looks like a cross between a short sword and a machete. Forged primarily as a forestry tool and secondarily as a slashing weapon, the blade's enchantments provide boons to anyone operating in wilderness environments.

You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. Once attuned, add your proficiency bonus to Survival rolls to forage food, gather firewood, build shelters, follow tracks, blaze trails, and navigate the wilderness. If you are already proficient with or have expertise in Survival, simply add your proficiency bonus again.

Blood - Bloodward Vial (Promptover 2025 #17)

Cylindrical pendant (MET, 22.1.61)
Just 3 drops...

Thankfully we've moved beyond the days where everyday magic requires a living power source. But some older items still require a blood sacrifice to function. One of the most well-documented is the Bloodward Vial.

Bloodward Vial
Wondrous item, uncommon to very rare (requires attunement)

This old cylindrical pendant consists of woven strands of gold around a small glass or crystal vial. Its red metal cap has a loop for a leather cord or metal chain, and it unscrews to expose the inside of the vial. It may contain blackened dust when found.

Many varieties of the Bloodward Vial exist, each offering a different defensive spell that activates automatically just as an appropriate effect lands. Anyone who attunes to the item will know which spell the vial contains, and that the vial requires 3 drops of the wearer's blood and a short ritual to activate.

Secrets - Fountain of Secrets (Promptober 2025 #7)

FountainSalzburg2023
Fountain of Secrets

This weather-stained stone goat face spews water into a basin underneath it. It sits next to a fine house away from the town's center, aa aging high-end private water supply for a well-to-do family. If you whisper to a copper coin and toss it in the basin, sometimes the goat's head will whisper a secret to you. If you bend down and put your ear to its mouth, the water will stop long enough for it to whisper softly, then resume spraying directly into your ear.

The secret might not have any relevance or context, and it may be hundreds of years old, but it is always true. It may promise treasure or threaten the reputation of someone in town. The goat may be old, but he still has an endless pile of secrets left to tell the world.

The fountain gives tantalizing almost-specific hints to something that may have happened in the past or a clue as to something that happened recently. It's an oracle spewing random truths with even more obfuscation than usual.

Dark Woods - Darkwood (Promptober 2025 #4)

Moon tree in moonlight.

A narrow, rambling sinkhole snakes behind the stone hut in Medusa's Grove, home to a large colony of gargoyles (and no medusae at all). Gargoyles line the edge of the sinkhole to sleep, blocking the sun during the day and exposing the trees to moonlight when they wake up and leave at night. These trees have silvery-grey leaves and bark so black that it looks oil-stained. The elves call this precious resource Ithil nimloth (moon tree), and they grow the trees in specially-constructed moonhouses which let in the moonlight while blocking sunlight. Humans simply call it Darkwood.

The wood itself looks quite dark, more dark grey than brown, and it shimmers slightly under moonlight. The trees consume very little water as they grow, so the wood looks fine-grained and extremely dense but feels surprisingly light. Any wooden item made from darkwood weighs half as much as normal (and the encumbrance penalty goes down by 1 item to a minimum of 0 in Swords of Cepheus), including bows, staves, and weapon hafts. The dense grain makes it stronger than the hardiest oak, doubling durability and resistance to damage.

Potions - Bottle of Plenty (Promptober 2025 #3)

A bottle in the wild.

Ever wonder how so many healing potions end up randomly laying around in dungeons? This handy little item might explain that phenomenon. Read on, and you'll be hoarding empty potion bottles in case any of them spontaneously refill.

Bottle of Plenty
Wondrous item, rare
This normal-looking transparent crystal vial is designed to hold a potion. A ceramic stopper lined with red cork seals the bottle tightly, attached by a multi-piece metal cage set into holes in the glass that flips open and closed with the flick of a thumb. It resists dropping and crushing damage, and the bottle and stopper both radiate conjuration magic.

By placing a drop of liquid inside and sealing the bottle with the stopper, the bottle duplicates the liquid until it completely fills the bottle. This process varies in length, taking 8 hours for a mundane liquid like water, oil, or whiskey, or 24 hours for magical liquids. The bottle will duplicate a potion of up to uncommon rarity from a single drop.

Coin of Fortune Reversal

Wondrous item, rare

This ancient platinum coin has runic letters spelling out "Fate" on one side, and XIII representing the number 13 in Roman numerals under a rounded image of a full bag on the other. It has a nice weight for flipping, and it rings out a clear tone whenever flipped, easily audible within 60 feet.

As a reaction, you may flip the coin, requiring at least one free hand or a mage hand cast by someone who wields wild magic. The result of any d20 roll within 30 feet of the coin can be reversed, by flipping the die over and reading the bottom face. For normal d20s, this should result in a new value of 21 minus the original roll. So a roll of 1 would become a 20 and vice versa.

Pocket Mansion

Wondrous item, very rare (requires attunement)

This normal-looking piece of finely-woven midnight blue linen rolls or folds into a fist-sized package, but it opens up to a five foot square when unfolded and spread on a flat surface. It easily fits in a belt pouch or a scroll case for storage and transport. The corners will stick to vertical surfaces, allowing easy deployment against walls, though the corners will come loose with a light tug.

You can use an action to unfold a pocket mansion and place it on or against a hard surface, whereupon the surface shimmers and forms a magical portal to an extradimensional space, similar to a portable hole. However, the pocket mansion allows access to a small hallway with a door at the far end which opens into a permanent Mordenkainen's magnificent mansion. The mansion's owner can configure the interior as they see fit per the spell, with up to 100 nearly invisible servants able to serve a 9-course feast once per day, refreshing at dawn. Items can be brought in from beyond the portal and stored inside, making it an easy way to transport a wide variety of bulky items. Nobody knows if the mansion has an upper weight limit for creatures and stored goods.

Ring of Enhanced Healing

A braided ring with copper, silver, and gold strands.
Ring of Enhanced Healing
Ring, uncommon (requires attunement)

Single strands of copper, silver, and gold weave together to form this otherwise unadorned band. It radiates evocation magic under a detect magic spell. When the wearer casts an instantaneous healing spell from the Evocation school of up to 5th level, every target of that spell regains an additional +1 hit point.

The ring contains a pool of 2 sorcery points, which can be used by a sorcerer or someone with the Metamagic Adept feat as if they were part of their sorcery point pool. This pool refreshes daily at dawn.

Occam's Razor

Weapon (broadsword), legendary (requires attunement)

The finest blade forged by Finn Durgin, Occam's Razor weighs less than a regular basket-hilted broadsword. Its straight, unusually thin fullered blade shows a complex Damascus pattern formed from two different grades of steel and thin layers of mithril. The basket hilt has gold and platinum woven into it, and a half-spherical diamond peeks out of a setting in the pommel. Finn's triangular FD mark is stamped at the very base of the blade.

The blade functions as a finesse weapon since the materials and workmanship make it so light and well-balanced. Its scabbard likewise sports gold, platinum, and mithril filigree in intricate detail to match the hilt and echo the Damascus pattern. Finn worked metal for a lifetime before spending two years forging and enchanting Occam's Razor, and it shows. A year later, Finn died with a smile on his lips.

Sunderscale

Weapon (greatsword), legendary (requires attunement)

This claymore's fine steel blade holds a sharp edge, but the hilt looks crudely made. The pommel features a pair of green dragon scales glued back-to-back. Other than the scales and a fuller in the blade, the hilt remains unadorned with a simple square crossguard, the sort of plain reserved for a workhorse weapon used daily rather than a display blade.

Finn Durgin forged it 630 years ago specifically to kill Dur'galad the green dragon and clear the land to found the city of Occam. He forged it in a hurry and didn't spend much time on anything except the blade, which he had enchanted to within an inch of its life. He never liked the look of the sword, but he never found the time to go back and change it. Finn's uncle Seamus Durgin wielded it as his main weapon until his death.

The Persuader

Weapon (warhammer), very rare (requires attunement)

This all-steel hammer closely resembles a sledge hammer in size and shape, though its double-faced head feels lighter and well-balanced for combat. It vibrates to the touch, a hint of the sonic power contained within it. When attuned, the hammer thrums whenever held, and it speaks the word "Yield" in a commanding voice resembling the wielder's whenever it attacks or uses a special power. It makes a terrible weapon for those who value stealth.

The wielder gains a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. All other abilities of The Persuader only reveal themselves after attunement. At the wielder's option, it can cause non-lethal damage, meaning it will neither cause damage nor trigger death saves after a target falls to zero hit points. Persuading the dead lies outside of The Persuader's purview.

Amulet of Feign Death

Wondrous item, uncommon

A stylized scrimshaw skull etched into a cylindrical whale tooth the size of a human thumb hangs from a simple silver chain. The lower jaw rotates clockwise, and it offers some resistance, as if a spring-loaded timer mechanism engages when turned. It turns almost all the way around before stopping. The timer gradually ticks down, taking 24 hours to return to its original position. It can be set for less time by rotating it less, but it has a maximum of 24 hours. The teeth offer a fairly reliable guide for setting the timer for up to four hours (one tooth width per hour on the timer), but anything beyond that requires guesswork. Any desired time between 4 and 24 hours varies by 3d10 minutes due to the loose tolerance of a mechanical timer.

During this time, if the amulet is placed around someone's neck, they immediately drop into a death-like state as the feign death spell (Constitution save DC 15 to resist each round the amulet is worn). This also takes effect if the timer is set while it is worn. The wearer becomes blinded and incapacitated, and all attempts to detect signs of life fail, including through magical means. The wearer can still hear what happens around them, though the memory of what they hear may become jumbled after several hours in a death-like state. When the timer completes and the skull clicks back into position, the effect ends, the blindness fades, and the wearer rouses from their death-like state.

Phase Silk Kimono

A blue kimono with a white cloud motif.
Wondrous item (robe), very rare or legendary (greater) (requires attunement)

The Yamagura Empire harvests silk from phase spiders as well as from silkworms. Textiles made from this phase silk preserve some of the extraplanar properties of phase spiders with very little magical encouragement. Phase silk weighs half as much as regular silk for the same thickness, so a phase silk kimono typically weighs 1-2 pounds and does not inhibit movement. Only the Yamagura Empire produces these items, though the Okulari in the far west rarely find enough phase silk to make tunics with similar properties.

The phase silk kimono grants a +1 bonus to the wearer's Armor Class and saving throws. Using a bonus action, the wearer can cast the blink spell which lasts for 1 minute or until dismissed or dispelled. This property of the kimono can't be used again until the next dawn. Arcane spellcasters favor this kimono, and most are created for a specific individual, though they magically resize to fit the wearer during the attunement process.

Travel Teapot

A ceramic 6-cup teapot with a finish reminiscent of sandstone.
Travel Teapot
Wondrouns item (teapot), common

This simply-decorated ceramic teapot radiates transmutation magic. It has a wide opening at the top with a tight-fitting lid, and its steel lining has a regular pattern of small perforations to strain liquid as it pours out the spout. These commonly appear as part of a wealthy family's everyday tea service, usually with 6 matching teacups and saucers.

When the teapot is filled with water (other liquids will not work) and the lid is turned clockwise until it clicks, the metal lining begins to heat rapidly as if by a heat metal spell. Turning the lid counterclockwise will stop the effect immediately. The heat lasts for 1 minute, which brings the water to a boil. Add loose tea immediately after the boil, and steep for the recommended time before pouring. For lesser amounts of liquid, steam escapes through a hole in the lid causing a piercing whistle which rotates the lid counterclockwise to stop the heat early.

Arrow of Grounding

Rama, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
Weapon (arrow), common

The Fellport Watch keep bundles of these heavy arrows ready for use along the walls and spires of the city to deter flying invaders. Their distinctive heads attract iron as all lodestones do. The standard Watch arrows all have black fletching with a grey cock feather, though other variations certainly exist.

When fired at an opponent wearing metal armor, these arrows grant a +1 bonus to hit. On a hit, the target must roll a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failed saving throw, the target's fly speed drops to zero for two rounds, and they start falling from the sky, but they also gain resistance to lightning damage.

Ring of Storing

Pittigrilli, CC BY 4.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0>, via Wikimedia Commons
Wondrous item, uncommon

This unassuming and unadorned band looks very plain, but fairly expensive. The platinum band has a single tiny diamond inset into it, flush with the surface of the band. The diamond may or may not glow dimly when found. The ring magically adjusts to fit the wearer's finger perfectly.

When the wearer uses a bonus action to toss an object into the air and snap their fingers using the hand with the ring, the object disappears. The ring of storing transports the object into an extradimensional space for storage. When the wearer uses a bonus action to snap their fingers again, the object reappears above the ring and drops into their hand. The diamond glows faintly when the ring has an item stored, not enough to see by, but enough to be noticed.

Acumen

Weapon (rapier), legendary (requires attunement by a non-shapeshifter)

Elven smiths created Acumen out of a unique alloy of mithril and adamantine, making it both light and impossibly strong. This alloy should splinter apart according to dwarven smiths, but somehow Acumen persists. Its slightly curved blade and flowing guard indicate elven manufacture from at least 1000 years ago. A spherical tiger eye gem serves as its pommel, the pupil seemingly following anyone who looks at it from any direction. The Alfinwald High Circle of Mages imbued it with the ability to break illusions and force shapeshifters back to their natural form, and disciples of the Morning Star steeped it in their god's holy light.

Prior to attunement, Acumen grants its wielder a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon, and it will glow with pale blue starlight when mentally commanded to do so. If the wielder is targeted by an illusion or polymorph spell, Acumen will immediately attempt to dispel the effect as a dispel magic spell cast at 4th level (for 5th level spells and above, roll a d20 against a DC of 6 + the spell's level to dispel).

Fog Gem

Fog Gem
Wondrous item, rare

This ten pound melon-sized rough ovoid of smoky quartz swirls and billows like actual smoke if you stare into it long enough. On command it creates a fog cloud with a radius of 60 feet centered on itself. Anyone touching the Fog Gem can see through the fog it generates. It doesn't require concentration to maintain, and it can be dispersed by the creator as a free action. The fog also immediately disperses if the creator stops touching the Fog Gem. The fog persists for up to 3 hours per day, regardless of how many times the cloud is created or destroyed.

When mounted onto a building or vehicle, the radius of the fog becomes 120 feet. Anyone within the building or vehicle can see through the fog it generates.
